Brskovo Fortress Project

The project represents a contemporary reinterpretation of the old fortress and mining settlement of Brskovo, with a clear intention to preserve, revive, and bring its historical heritage closer to present-day users.
The concept is based on a careful analysis of the archaeological site, its spatial matrix, historical content, and the relationships between the fortress, religious buildings, and mining settlement.
The new design adopts the logic of the medieval town and translates it into a contemporary architectural language through the thoughtful shaping of space, function, and atmosphere.
A particular strength of the project lies in its use of traditional forms, stone, and timber, reinterpreted in a modern, subtle, and context-sensitive way.
The urban layout of the complex is conceived to connect public spaces, the main square, craft workshops, tourist units, and the fortress into one coherent spatial and narrative whole.
The fortress is envisioned as the central symbol and key identity marker of the site, incorporating a museum, congress hall, hospitality facilities, and lookout points that further activate the location.
At the same time, the project respects the historical authenticity of Brskovo while generating new value through the site’s cultural, educational, and tourism potential.
An important aspect of the proposal is the creation of an atmosphere that allows visitors to experience continuity between past and present through architecture, landscape, and carefully designed sequences of movement.
Particular significance and recognition are given to this project by the fact that it won the third prize in an international competition, further confirming it as a highly valuable and distinguished design proposal.
Brskovo therefore stands as a synthesis of research, architectural sensitivity, and a contemporary interpretation of heritage, with strong potential to become a new cultural landmark of the place.
